Yes! you read it right. Like flights, you have to pay the extra charges or penalty for carrying extra luggage in trains too.
According to the rules, a passenger in the first-class air-conditioned compartment is allowed 70 kg of luggage for free and a maximum of 150 kg. An AC two-tier passenger can carry 50 kg of luggage for free and a maximum of 100 kg. A sleeper class and a second class passenger can carry luggage weighing up to 40 kg and 35 kg. The maximum baggage allowed is 80 kg and 70 kg.
Although, from last few decades railways were lenient to passengers in carrying luggage and many passengers don’t even know how much luggage they are allowed to carry with them. But now the officials said that many passengers carry too much baggage with them which cause problems for fellow passengers. Moreover, they said that the rules were already there but now they are implementing them strictly. Like airlines, they will check whether the passenger’s baggage is more bulky than limit or not but these checks will be random, unlike airlines. On carrying extra luggage the amount of fine is six times more than fees.
Railway starts to enforce these rules from the first week of June. Apart from this, passengers have to book extra luggage in advance.
