The story of changing the name ‘Lata Mangeshkar’
It’s mentioned in Lata Sur Gatha by Yatindra Mishra, who wrote the book on Lata Mangeshkar. He writes in the book’s chapter Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai –
At one time Lata Mangeshkar also directed music for Marathi films under the pen name of ‘Anandghan’. It is probably in the late sixties, when Bhalji Pendharkar, a big producer-director of Marathi films, was making a film named ‘Mohityanchi Manjula’ on the historical story of Shivaji Maharaj. He approached music directors of his choice. But at that time no one had time. Bhalji Pendharkar was in a hurry and could not stop the production of this film till the music directors fell vacant.
In such a situation, his family friend and daughter like Lata Mangeshkar suggested that if Bhalji Baba wanted, she could help in making music. The director refused because by then Lata had become a big name. He was afraid that if the music of the film did not perform well, then Lata Mangeshkar’s name would be spoiled. Once again Lata Mangeshkar suggested to him that if Bhalji Baba wanted, she could give music under a pseudonym. This thing caught some of their attention. In this way a name was decided ‘Jatashankar’.
Lata ji tells that she did not like this name and chose a word ‘Anandghan’ from the poem of Ramdas Swami, a saint poet of Marathi. Its meaning was liked by her – ‘clouds of joy’. In this way, Lata Mangeshkar had told her director that she would give music in the name of ‘Anandghan’, for which she was gladly given permission.
