Yagnik was born on March 20, 1966, in Kolkata, West Bengal. Her mother Subha Yagnik was a singer of Indian classical music. And you will be surprised to know that at just the age of 6 she got the opportunity to sing for All India Radio. She moved to Mumbai with her mother when she was 10 years old. Here she met Bollywood superstar Raj Kapoor. He liked her voice very much and introduced her to renowned musician duo Laxmikant-Pyare Lal. And she started her career as a backing singer in 1979.
Her biggest challenge as a singer was that when she chose singing as her career, she had Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle in front of her. It was very difficult for her to prove herself as the musicians could not take the risk of believing in anyone other than Lata and Asha. Initially, she had very few opportunities to sing, but her song ‘Ek Do Teen’, which she sang for the 1988 film ‘Tezaab’ was so super hit that she became a star overnight. After this song, not only music lovers became obsessed with her voice but she also got many big projects in Bollywood. Composer Laxmikant-Pyarelal played the biggest role in bringing him to the world of cinema. She also sang many songs with artists like Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, and Sonu Nigam. Apart from Hindi, she has sung in Urdu, Gujarati, Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.
