From just a start-up to one of the most innovative cell-phone brands in the world, OnePlus has come a long way and is now the renowned “flagship-killer”. All of its smartphone intend to do only one thing-destroy all other flagships of other companies. While OnePlus 5 launched on June 22nd in India. So why is it being called the flagship killer? Why so much hype around it? We are here to answer these burning questions in a moment.

Design and Build Quality

Design-yes, the front indeed looks like the OnePlus 3T, but it is different-with more rounded corners and slight curves sitting on the top and bottom. The dual-cameras and the LED flash do give it a sexy look. It looks quite similar to the I-Phone 7, but then it is definitely not a copy.

The aluminium unibody, is a treat for your hands, and even slimmer now at 7.25mm and lighter too at 153 grams. The sides have been shaved off quite a bit, and the glass curves along the edges give an amazing hold. Slightly slippery without a cover, is something that must be kept in mind. The OnePlus 5 takes in drops well enough and the few times it fell accidentally due to its slippery nature, it only suffered minor bumps and scratches along the edge.

The 5.5 inch AMOLED display feels good with the blacks and colour saturation. The display, which supports the DCI-P3 profile, is something that has been seen recently in the iPhone 7. The only notable compromise is that it has kept the display full-HD, and not quad or 4K, probably to keep costs down.

Specs-The insides that matter.

OnePlus’s main reputation is based on its top end specs at low prices-the company has kept up with the tradition-the 8 cored Snapdragon 835, running up to 2.45GHz, never shows any stutter. The LPDDR4X ram and the UFS 2.1 storage are all latest in line. The two-lane ROM, is supposed to double bandwidth, making for faster app installation.

NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, aptX and aptX HD support, dual-band Wi-Fi, 2×2 MIMO antennas, GPS, and USB-OTG, are all best in line.Fingerprint sensor, as expected, is integrated, into the home button. It’s quick and rarely misreads. All the usual bucket of sensors, along with the gyroscope are all present, though the FM radio and wireless charging are missing.

The new OxygenOS 4.5.0 is built on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and feels more slick and easier to use.

Performance, camera, and battery life.

Gaming and media playback are both excellent. Neither are there frame drops, nor any heating issues and it handles high-res games like Asphalt and GTA like a breeze.

Now to come to what you have had questions about for quite some time-the dual rear cameras. Even the camera app of the two phones are pretty much identical.

The primary camera comes with a 16-megapixel sensor (Sony IMX 398) with a f/1.7 large aperture along with (EIS). Focal length is 24mm. Lack of optical stabilisation (OIS) is a very big disappointment, more so since the OnePlus 3T had it.

The second sensor packs a 32mm focal length, 20-megapixel camera and has an aperture of f/2.6, though lacks EIS. Switching between the two sensors, needs you to hit the 2x button on the screen. Official statement says, optical zoom goes on till 1.6x, while the rest is software though apparently “lossless”.
