In India, marrying your own cousins or relatives is seen as taboo but in Pakistan, this tradition is very common. There are several popular personalities in Pakistan who are married to their own cousins:
In 1996, Pakistani cricketer Saeed Anwar married his cousin sister Lubna Anwar. Further, Anwar faced a huge personal tragedy when his daughter, Bismah, died after a prolonged illness in 2001.
In 2000, former Pakistan national cricket team captain Shahid Afridi married his cousin Nadia. They are blessed with four daughters.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan married his uncle’s daughter Naheed Nusrat. He is widely considered to be the most important qawwal in the history of Pakistan. Nusrat received the President of Pakistan’s Award for Pride of Performance for his contribution to Pakistani music.
Babar married his cousin Bisma after the death of his first wife, Sana Khan, in a car accident. Bisma was only in standard 9 when they got married.
Reham was first married to her British psychiatrist cousin Ijaz Rehman. Later, she married former Pakistani cricketer and politician Imran Khan.
