In Pakistan’s Punjab province, a 16-year-old girl was raped by a man on the orders of the Panchayat or village council as a punishment after her brother had raped the sister of that man.
An incident came to light in Multan district. A man had complained to the panchayat that his 12-year-old sister had been raped by a man. In response, the panchayat ordered that man to rape the 16-year-old sister of the accused.
According to the Hindustan Times, Multan division police chief Ahsan Younis told PTI, “We have arrested 20 people including the head of the village council for ordering rape of the sister of Umer Wadda of Rajpur village.”
He further added: “The matter was brought to the village council that unanimously ordered the rape of Waada’s sister by Ashfaq. The Wadda’s family protested over the decision but it was told that justice could only be done if the same act was repeated with the accused’s sister.”
Police have also registered FIRs against 30 panchayat members and Ashfaq. Right now, they are investigating all the sides of the case.
Former Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jehangir and rights activist said: “It is unfortunate that the victims do not approach the police to redress the grievances.”
