Para-Cyclist Aditya Mehta Forced To Take Off Prosthetic Leg At Bengaluru Airport

About two months ago Para-cyclist Aditya Mehta was asked to remove his prosthetic leg at the Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) as part of a security check. Now once again on Tuesday he was again asked to remove his leg by the same officer.

Mehta, who is a silver medallist  at the Asian Para-Cycling Championship 2013 said that the incident left a “psychological scar” as he was forced to remove the prosthetic leg by the Central Industrial Reserve Force (CISF) while boarding a flight to Hyderabad on Tuesday morning. After removing his leg he had to wear it back this process takes 40 minutes and it led to bleeding from his leg.

Aditya Mehta posted on his facebook account, “Seems like the Bangalore Airport Central Industrial Security Force{cisf}Officials are not influenced at all by our previous campaign to replace the present security check system with a sensitized one. This morning when I had to board a flight from Bangalore at 5:30 am to Hyderabad, the CISF officials made me undo and redo my prosthesis during the security check. I have been suffering from an injury since the past 20 days with my stump (OPERATED LIMB) and the security check officials only had to say “It is your problem!” in this regards. It took me 40 min for the entire process of removing and wearing back my prosthesis limb which left me bleeding at the end. (sic),”

Mehta also said that he travels around the country and at other Airports, it was not an issue as they were sensible enough to understand  to understand his problem. “Many of the officials at other airports were sensible enough to understand when I told them about my injury and they let me go,” he wrote.

After the first incident in Bengaluru which took place  in August.  A campaign asking for the setting up of body scanners at airports for persons with disabilities had begun but nothing seems to have changed at the city’s airport.
