Canada comprises of a large population of Sikh immigrants which makes upto 1.40% of the total of Canada’s Population. Not only Sikhs have made their way to canada but have also created a visible presence in the United States taking sikhism and Punjabi across Indian boundaries.
For many years now, Punjabi has been an integral part of canada’s speech as a language and has now been announced as Canada’s third most important Language. Following this, Punjabi will also be made the Third officila language in the House of Commons of Canada right after English and French.
The said action was reportedly taken after the election of 20 punjabi speaking candidates as members of the Canadian Parliament. And out of these 20 Punjabi Speaking candidates, 18 are Liberals while 2 are conservatives.
The new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau shall unveil his new cabinet this week.
MP Deepak Obhrai of Conservative Party said, “The voice of the Indo-Canadian community will now be very well represented in the Parliament. In the overall aspect of it, the South Asian community won.”
