In shocking news, a convict in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi murder case who has been in prison for the past 27 years, has appealed for mercy killing. Yes, his name is Robert Pious. He wrote a letter to the Puzhal prison authorities on Wednesday in which he appealed for euthanasia means mercy killing.
Robert Pious had been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was declared a convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination. He is one of the seven convicts in Rajiv Gandhi’ murder. Earlier, the state government was ready to release all seven convicts in the case but then Supreme Court decided to block the remission process.
A senior police official said about his letter that,
“We cannot take any decision based on his letter. We have forwarded the same to the state home department through the DGP’s office. The matter pertains to the central government and the review case is still pending before the Supreme Court.”
Robert Pious is a Sri Lankan Tamil, he had alleged that he took part in the murder plot of Rajiv Gandhi in order to take revenge as he lost his child because of alleged atrocities by the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) which had been sent to Sri Lanka in the late 1980s.
In 1991, the government of Tamil Nadu had decided to release all the seven persons who were convicted in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. But later, the Supreme Court denied the remission process.
