A few days before news of liquor baron Vijay Mallya and congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s twitter handle hacks made rounds of the internet and now the new victim became senior journalists of the country.
On Saturday night, Twitter accounts of NDTV journalists Barkha Dutt and Ravish Kumar were also compromised. And what comes shockingly is that all the hacks were done by the same group called ‘Legion’.
The hackers group accessed the twitter accounts @ravishndtv and @BDUTT and hacked into the email accounts which were linked to the accounts. The group posted several expletive-laden messages which were made from both the accounts, which later were restored. The group also shared the link to a different database of Barkha Dutt’s emails which amounted equal to 1.2 GB.
The following statement came from NDTV following the hack :
“Email, Twitter accounts of senior NDTV journalists have been hacked. Attempts are being made to use emails out of context. We are asking relevant authorities, including courts, to take strong action.”
The hackers posted a message from Kumar’s account saying : “We use Twitter as a means to reach the public. We don’t just hack twitter accounts. Go through the data and find out.”
Signed, Legion it also warned :
“If we go to jail or die, at least we did it with a bang. If any one of us get arrested, over 1TB of confidential data will be leaked.”
The group also clarified that there was no political leanings behind their motive. “We do not work for @BJP4India or @PMOIndia,” they tweeted from Kumar’s account.
Legion also made a claim of releasing controversial data on businessman Lalit Modi, who is currently under the scanner on corruption charges. Responding to the hacks, Ravish Kumar said that these hacks could be supported by political parties who were inconvenienced by the journalism.
