Twin blasts rocked Imphal, Manipur’s capital, on the occasion of Republic Day. However, no one has been injured in both the incidents. At Mantripukhri in Imphal east, first blast took place which is about 5 km from Kangla Fort area, where the state’s Republic day parade was organised.
The Coordination Committee, a conglomerate of multiple Manipuri insurgent groups, has called for a boycott the Republic Day celebrations in Manipur.
The second blast occurred on the banks of Nambul river near the Manipur college campus in Imphal West around 8.30 AM.In seven newly-formed districts in the state, The United Council (UNC) has boycotted the Republic day celebrations. Protesting against the state government, UNC has been continuing its economic blockade of Imphal Valley.
Najma Heptulla, Manipur Governor, hoisted the tricolor in the middle of tight security arrangements in Imphal. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh with other senior state entities were present at the programme.
Security has been kept on high alert across Imphal for the occasion. Besides police, a large number of Manipur Rifles (MR) and India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel have also been patrolling across Imphal.
In fact, Army chief General Bipin Rawat had also reviewed the security situation in Manipur, a few days ahead of Republic Day.
