Thursday (October 15) brought another bad news for the film world. Famous Indian and Oscar winner costume designer Bhanu Athaiya passed away on this day. She was 91 years old. Bhanu had won the first Oscar award for the country. Her daughter Radhika Gupta informed about her demise.
Speaking to Etimes, many celebrities paid homage to the late Bhanu Athaiya. Bonnie Kapoor said we were fortunate to work with her. Amrish Puri’s tribal look in the film was much appreciated. She gave her best to the film. She has made the industry and the country proud. Renu Chopra, the producer of the film ‘Pati-Patni Aur Woh’, described Bhanu Athaiya as a trendsetter and said that Bhanu was the first costume designer in the film industry who was well educated in her art. Bhanu was a trendsetter. She designed costumes for two big hits ‘Waqt’ and ‘Nikah’ at that time.
Designer Niharika Bhasin, who won the National Award for the film ‘The Dirty Picture’, also expressed grief over Bhanu’s death. She said that she was very sad to hear the news of Bhanu’s death. Our industry has lost a legend. It is known that Bhanu started her film career as a costume designer in 1956 with Bollywood actor Guru Dutt’s film CID. Bhanu Athaiya was awarded an Oscar for designing a dress in the 1982 film ‘Gandhi’.
