Sania Mirza, the Tennis sensation of India. She was six years old when she played tennis for the first time. And the rest, as they say, is history. Sania Mirza, who has established herself as the most successful female Indian tennis player over the years, is also one of the most high-profile sportspersons in India. Everyone knows even after marrying a Pakistani citizen, Sania continued playing her game as a pro.
Although there are many fascinating and inspiring facts about this sports diva but one such we like to share is related to her marriage. Sania Mirza was married to Pakistani star cricketer Shoaib Malik on 12 April 2010 after a meeting in a restaurant in Australia. But before becoming Shoaib Malik’s bride, Sania Mirza had engaged with someone else. This person was none other than Sania’s childhood friend Sohrab Mirza.
They got engaged in 2009. The problem arose when Sohrab Mirza’s father said that after marriage Sania will not be allowed to play tennis. After the engagement, Sania Mirza went to Australia to play ‘Australia Open’. There, Pakistani cricket team had a match with Australia. During this time, Sania met Shoaib Malik in a restaurant. Both of them fell for each other. Then Sania decided to break the engagement with Sohrab and get married to Shoaib.
More interestingly, not only Sania Mirza but Shoaib Malik was also involved in a relationship before marrying Sania Mirza. It was Shoaib Malik’s second marriage to Sania Mirza. Reports emerged that Malik was already married to another Hyderabad girl, Ayesha Siddiqui. In 2002 Shoaib married Ayesha Siddiqui. The marriage lasted till 2010. However, Malik denied the allegations but eventually confirmed the marriage when the girl’s family released marriage certificate as a proof. Shoaib divorced his first wife only to marry Sania.
When people came to know about Sania and Shoaib’s wedding plan, they labeled their decision as an impulsive and call their wedding a rash one. Not only this, the couple also received several threats to call off their wedding.
