Aruna, the sex worker from Bangladesh who earned money by selling her body mired in the big problem. She thought of writing a letter to PM Narendra Modi to overcome her problem. She said,
‘I earned this money through much suffering. This money is precious. Please help me exchange it.’
Aruna is a sex worker and she had saved up the money that her clients tipped her with at an Indian brothel she was sold into. She saved this money with a thought that some day she exchange the notes once she returned to her homeland, Bangladesh.
But soon she came to know that the notes she had gathered and scraped together – 500 and 1000 rupee banknotes, totaling Rs10,000 – were worthless due to the phase of demonetization. In which the old notes of 500 and 1000 belong to Indian currency were ban by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in order to crack down corruption.
Aruna was rescued from a brothel in the Indian city of Pune. So with the help of Rescue Foundation, the organization that helped her in rescuing, Aruna filed a grievance to PM Modi himself by writing a letter and attaching it to a Twitter post. Here it is:
Her story is so heart-touching that it can melt your heart. She wrote in her letter that, “I used to hide this money from the brothel keeper in my pants pocket as I wanted to take it home, I earned this money through much suffering. This money is precious. Please help me exchange it,”
The demonetization policy by Narendra Modi to crack down black money has left unintended victims like Aruna with nothing. Aruna was trafficked into India by a man who was her co-worker in the garment factory where she was previously employed. He made a fake promise with her to grant a well-paying job. No sooner than she crossed the border, she was sold as a sex worker.
After being trafficked into India, she worked at a brothel in Bangalore for a year and a half before being sold to another in Pune. In the meantime, many people have come forward to give her money to take back home after her tweet.
