Greek and Indian Mythology are two of the oldest mythologies known to man. Although both of these mythologies have no established connection with each other, yet they share some striking similarities. Both the mythology attempts to explain the origins of the world, and details the lives and adventures of a wide variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines and mythological creatures.
Here we bring you some of the interesting things that you must have heard, watch or read in both the mythologies and have huge similarities :
Indra And Zeus
The first similarity that comes in mind in context of both the mythologies is between Lord Indra and Zeus. Not only both of them are King of Gods in their respective mythologies, but even their weapon is also same.
Not only both of them are King of Gods in their respective mythologies, but even their weapon is almost same.
And the similarities of both the Gods just doesn’t end with there weapon or status. Even their abode is quite similar. While Indra stays at Mount Meru, Zeus resided at Mount Olympus. Both of them also had much similar character traits.
Achilles and Karna
Just like Zeus and Indra, Karna and Achilles also share a lot of similarities. The most striking of which is their armor. Both of them had a kind of an impenetrable armor which almost made them invincible. Both of them were one of the most skilled warriors in their respective mythologies
Similarities doesn’t end here, both Karna and Achilles were a demigod. And before the final war, both of them were asked by their mother to not take part in the war.
Researching on both the mythologies deeply, we can understand that it was the death of these two warriors that eventually led to the end of both the wars.
Apart from Karna, Achilles was also born to a water goddess.
The Trojan War and Ramayana
Another very interesting similarity in both the myths is the great war which they witnessed – Ramayan and the Trojan War. Both of the legendary war was fought for a woman.
The Ramayana happened after Ravana kidnapped Sita, while the Trojan war took place when Helen ran away with Paris.
The Holy Trio
The presence of a kind of a holy trio can be found in both of these mythologies. In Indian Mythology, in spite of all the other Gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar are considered to the three most important Gods.
Similarly, in the Greek mythology, you have Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon who respectively rule the heavens, the underworld, and the seas. They are considered as the three most important Gods in the Greek mythology.
Hades and Yama
Hades and Yama are two very similar characters. Both of them are the lords of the underground.
But interestingly, both of them are not evil. They just assign a person a place in Hell or Heaven, based on their virtues and vices.
Saptarishis and the seven sisters
Just like hindu mythology has the concept of Sapthrishis, Greeks have the concept of the Seven sisters. According to our mythology, the Saptharishis are the seven bright stars that can control even the Sun.
In Greek mythology, these seven sisters are known as the Pleiades. Just like the Saptarishis, they are also a cluster of stars.
Icarus and Sampati
The account of Icarus and Daedalus is presumably a standout amongst the most told stories. Curiously, this story has a parallel in the Indian Mythology too. Much the same as them, we have the tale of Jatayu and Sampati.
One day when they were flying high in the sky, Jatayu went excessively near the sun, so Sampati, to save Jatayu, followed him. In spite of the fact that he saved Jatayu, his own wings got burnt because of the warmth of the sun and he fell straight to the ground simply like Icarus.
Hermes and Narada
Both Hermes and Narada acted as messengers and both of them were sons of two most powerful Gods in their own respective mythologies. They share a lot of similar characteristic traits as well.
At times, both are shrewd and cunning. Both of them are often known to trick and mislead people with their twisty words and riddles.
All these similarities prove that despite both mythologies do not share any common bond or are linked to each other in any way. But human beings all over the world are basically the same.
