It was in August 2006 when the news TV channels were highlighting a shocking news. The news about the legendary Indian hockey player and former captain Sandeep Singh. The 20-year-old was traveling with his Indian team-mate Rajpal Singh on the New Delhi-bound Shatabdi Express from Kalka, when he was accidentally shot by an assistant sub-inspector of the Railways Police Force.
The bullet from the assistant sub-inspector’s service pistol injured Sandeep in the lower-back region. The bullet was lodged in the pelvis in front of the sacrum and the fracture of anterolateral border L2. He was all shattered physically and mentally as he was heading towards Hockey World Cup but all his dreams were gone in vain.
He got paralyzed and used a wheelchair for more than two years. But he was a sportsperson and he never learned to give up on life. He worked hard and fought back. He got back on his feet and made a comeback to international hockey in 2008. And then something unbelievable happened, India won the 2009 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup under his captaincy and went on to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.
The upcoming film Soorma is showcasing his amazing story of fight back. The film’s tagline is “The Greatest Comeback Story of the Hockey Legend Sandeep Singh”. The film stars Diljit Singh, Tapsee Pannu, Angad Bedi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda etc.
Every Indian should watch the biopic of this legendary hockey player. It is because it’s not just a story that will entertain you but its a life-lesson for fighting against all odds.
