The reputation of India skipper Suryakumar Yadav in T20I cricket is growing as he added another feather to his cap on Tuesday.Riding high after India defeated Australia in the Twenty20 Internationals, Suryakumar made history by becoming the fastest Indian to reach 2000 runs in Twenty20 Internationals to begin the South African tour.
Surya’s achievement puts him on par with Virat Kohli in terms of innings played, but he has played more matches than the previous captain of India. SKY is participating in his 59th Twenty20 International match for India, while Kohli required an extra game (60) to bat against England in Manchester in 2010 despite scoring two thousand runs.
In October 2022, Suryakumar rose to the top of the T20I batting rankings and has remained there ever since. Surya maintained his excellent form in 2023 after finishing the previous year with 1164 runs in 31 matches. He has now scored 592 runs from 17 matches at an average of 45.53 and a strike rate of over 153, including one century and four fifties.
India was called to bat in the second T20I of the series, and Surya led from the front after rain destroyed the first one without a ball being bowled.
When Tilak removed 19 from Jansen’s second over, Surya was next to come off the bench. SKY knocked 15 off Gerald Coetzee’s opening over with two fours and a signature lap shot for six. They did not stop. After hitting three fours and another six, Surya reached his fifty within 11 overs, helping India surpass 100 runs. At the age of 56, Suryakumar chipped Tabraiz Shami to long off, ending his innings.
