Everyone Celebrates Raksha Bandhan, But Do You Know The Myth Behind Rakhi ?

We all know what Raksha Bandhan is, it is a Hindu festival in which a sister ties a cotton thread on her brother’s wrist as a symbol of love and affection showed by her and brother in return of this gesture promises to protect her from miseries. Not only Hindu’s other religion also celebrate this secular festival. Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians. But do you know the real story behind Raksha Bandhan ? How it all started ? From where it achieved significance ?. Well, there are many stories behind the origin of Raksha Bandhan.

The War Between The God’s And Demon’s

According to Bhavishya Purana, In the fight between The Gods lead by Indra – the deity of the sky, rain and thunderbolts and The Demons lead by its king Bali. Indra was on the verge of losing the fight, it was then Indra wife Sachi asked Vishnu for guidance as how can Indra win the fight ? Then Vishnu gave Sachi a bracelet which was made from cotton thread and called it Holy. Then Sachi tied this holy thread given by Vishnu on the wrist of Indra, which was blessed with his wife prayers for his well-being and success. And as a result, Indra won the battle and recovered Amaravati. After this story, the significance of holy festival increased.

King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi

According to Hindu scriptures Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana, when Vishnu won the three worlds from Demon King “Bali”, Bali requested Vishnu to stay at his palace which Vishnu accepted. But goddess Lakshmi was not happy with her husband decision  and desired to go back to Vaikuntha . So, in order to fulfill her wish she went to Bali and tied a rakhi on his wrist and as a gesture Bali asked Lakshmi what she wanted as her gift. Then, Goddess Lakshmi asked Bali to free Vishnu from his request of staying in the palace. Bali agreed and accepted her as his sister.

Birth Of Santoshi Maa

Lord Ganesha had two sons Subh and Labh. Every year Lord Ganesha sister used to visit him and Tie a rakhi on his wrist. Both sons of Ganesha became frustrated as they have no sister to look after them. They asked their father for a sister but got no answer. Then Saint Narada appears and tells Ganesha that if he had a daughter it will prove to be beneficial for him. After this Ganesha agreed and by the divine flames emerging from his both wives ” Ruddhi “and ” Siddhi ”, created a daughter named Santoshi Maa ( Goddess of Satisfaction ) .

Krishna And  Draupadi

Krishna and Draupadi were friends. When Krishna was beheading Shishupal, he got injured as his finger was cut in the process of beheading Shishupal. Seeing this Draupadi immediately torn off a piece from her sari and bandaged his cut. Krishna said to Draupadi that with this act she had indebted him and that he will repay back when the time arrives. And whenever Draupadi needed cloth she used to pray to Krishna for help and he used to help her by giving her clothes ( like in Mahabharata ). This is another story behind the origin of Raksha Bandhan.

Yama And Yamuna

According to legends, Yama The god of death had not visited her sister the Yamuna for a long period of twelve years. She was depressed and told her misery to Ganga ( Goddess of Ganga river ). then Ganga Told Yama and he visited the Yamuna. She was beaming with happiness and prepared lots of dishes for Yama.  Lord Yama was delighted and overwhelmed and asked the Yamuna what she wanted in a gift. She wished her brother i.e Yama visit me again. Then Yama seeing her affection made her immortal ( Yamuna River ).
