The show was based on the Ankh-Morpork City Watch from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series of fantasy novels. The Watch, set in the fictitious Discworld city of Ankh-Morpork, was characterized by Terry Pratchett in 2012 as a “Pratchett-style CSI” it was to replicate the pattern of a “crime of the week ” as addressed by the city’s police department under the direction of Sam Vimes.

With the exception of Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer of Game of Thrones), the main cast of actors’ plot points were neatly wrapped up toward the finish of season 1; he was transferred to the Observer’s domain, a space that seems to exist beyond the spatial and temporal, at last having found their presence after the Observers spent almost the whole first season attempting to bring him down. Season 2 could take the personality of Vimes anyplace, because of the limitless opportunities of the multiverse depicted through the Observers domain.
