Jessica Whelan, the four-year-old girl who was battling cancer, has now passed away.
A few weeks ago, Andy Whelan had shared a heartbreaking photo of his daughter, Jessica, to show the world the ‘true face’ of cancer. The girl had been given just a few weeks to live after she was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma.
Jessica passed away last morning and the sad truth about her demise was shared by her heartbroken dad on Facebook.
I feel both sadness and relief in informing you all that Jessica finally found peace at seven o’clock this morning. No longer does she suffer, no longer does she feel the pain of the physical constraints of her body.
Jessica and her family suffered the horrors of her condition for more than twelve months. Last September, she was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma after initially being diagnosed wrongly for a bone injection.
After staying in the hospital for 10 weeks, the doctors examined her one more time before discharging her. It was then they found out a mass around her liver. They broke the news to the family along with breaking their hearts.
Neither chemotherapy nor a clinical trial could shrink Jessica’s tumour. In October, the doctors told the family that her tumour had spread to other parts of her body. That’s when Andy and his wife, Nicki decided to withdraw treatment and make Jessica’s remaining days the most beautiful they could.
Andy, after sharing Jessica’s suffering in the photo that broke millions of hearts, had wanted people to know the real face of cancer and what it did to those who were battling it day in and day out.
“This is the true face of cancer, my baby girl’s blood vessels protruding from beneath her skin, a solitary tear running down her cheek, her body stiffened and her face contorted in pain.”
We hope God gives the family immense strength to deal with their beautiful child’s loss.
