Looking for something new? Then you’ve come to the right place because we have collected the strangest old films that meet all the requirements of surreal cinema.
These movies will definitely distort your perception of reality. Each movie on the list relies on visual metaphors or hidden meanings, so they’re pretty heavy on their own. No, most likely, they will not make you shudder, but, nevertheless, will shake you to the core.
The Holy Mountain
It’s psychedelic, surreal fiction that doesn’t follow any conventional rules, doesn’t fit into any synopsis and presents us with visuals that no ordinary person could come up with. It is difficult to properly explain what the film “The Holy Mountain” is about, but the plot is based on the search for enlightenment in a corrupt world. It begins with a character (eerily similar to Jesus), whom we know as a thief, meeting a powerful alchemist. He guides our protagonist and seven other people from his retinue on a journey to the Sacred Mountain. Every frame in this movie is saturated with symbolism telling the same story, and you really have to watch The Holy Mountain multiple times to get it right. Wait, correction: understand at least half.
Taxidermia
A surreal comedy-drama in which the history of Hungary from the Second World War to the present day is retold using a metaphorical way of storytelling. The film tells the stories of three men – a pervert, an aspiring racing enthusiast, and a passionate taxidermist. Even though Taxidermy gets quite creepy at times, it manages to tackle serious topics with wit and unique imagination. So give it a try if you have the guts!
Funky Forest
A surreal anthology comedy featuring several comical storylines. These absurdities mostly revolve around the character known as Brother Guitar, his older brother, and their overweight Caucasian brother. The movie doesn’t make any sense at first, but every minute you enjoy watching it more and more, and then you start to fully enjoy the incredible experience, consisting of various cutscenes, gags, commercials, and all the craziness that you can imagine.
