For all filmmakers, creating blockbusters is an expensive and risky matter, since each mistake will cost them millions of dollars, losses can be hundreds of millions. This list will include films that failed at the box office, or turned out to be extremely weak in terms of the audience’s assessment.
The Lone Ranger (2013)
The film is a representative of the western genre and its budget at one time struck and plunged into extremely big doubts about the quality of the film itself. It has a stellar cast, the main lure of the film is Johnny Depp, who plays an Indian here, and Armie Hammer is the main character. Why is this painting so expensive?

Well, the biggest expense is the incredible sets, namely, several real 19th-century steam locomotives were used in the film, and large-scale scenes were filmed on them at a speed of at least 50 km / h. It sounds as cool and crazy as possible, but the film went too far with this, many people will not want to watch a western in principle, since the genre is dying out and not very popular in the 21st century, if there were a lot of westerns in the 20th century, then in our time they are all removed less and less.
Another problem for the film was Johnny Depp’s large fee, for this film he received $ 20 million in fixed income.
How the filmmakers managed to persuade the producers to give them such money is still not clear to me. The film itself is extremely weak and not particularly watchable, it is better to spend time on better films.
Budget $215,000,000, US fees $89,302,115, Worldwide gross $260,502,115
Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (2017)
This is the second movie with Johnny Depp on this list. The last part of the “Pirates”, which turned out to be the weakest and most failed against the background of other parts of the franchise, even in terms of fees.

The viewers of this picture, despise and do not love with all their hearts, this was based on my personal opinion and the opinion of reviewers on KinoPoisk. “Pirates”, although they did not claim to be realistic, what the legendary franchise has become is scary to look at. It has already become some kind of fairy tale and not the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow and his friends. Incomprehensible heroes who have nothing to do with the franchise at all, are shoved right in our noses and love these characters, the creators tell us. Why do this at the end of the entire franchise? This is just the dumbest idea that cost the entire film its reputation, which has already shaken another 4 parts of the franchise.
Even though the film grossed nearly $800 million worldwide, I still consider it the biggest flop in the franchise.
Budget $230,000,000, US fees $172,558,876, International box office $794,861,794
John Carter (2012)
This movie is one of Disney’s biggest fails as we all remember the mediocrity of this movie, it really didn’t live up to its budget in that it didn’t come to fruition. The wrong choice of director and actor ensured the film failed.

Andrew Stanton is an animation director, he only manages to make cartoons. Why was he left to film a big-budget blockbuster? Unclear. Taylor Kitsch as the main actor is generally a guard, he is not a star actor, and it will not work to lure the audience with his face. He is clearly not an actor for such a film.
George Lucas would have been better directed, he wanted to shoot it back in the 1970s, but it didn’t work out. In general, the history of the creation of this film was extremely painful, since Disney wanted to make it for many decades, but some factors constantly prevented this from being done. The picture could not be removed because of its scale and the poor development of special effects back in the distant 1980s.
Budget $250,000,000, US fees $73,078,100, Worldwide gross $284,139,100
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
While this movie isn’t the worst in the entire Star Wars franchise (it can’t compare to the last trilogy in breaking through the Mariana Trench), it did poorly at the box office. With such a huge budget, it was expected that there would be at least 1 billion in fees, but the film’s pathetic, almost $ 400 million does not pay off in any way.

Probably, the creators should not have gone too far and allocated such a lot of money for such a project, although it would seem that the film has a strong director Ron Howard, he had to somehow cope with the shooting, but the final result is a passer-by 5-6 points out of 10. Nothing there is nothing outstanding in the film, and I did not like the selected actor for the young Han Solo, but this is just my subjective opinion.
Budget $275,000,000, US fees $213,767,512, Worldwide gross $392,924,807
Superman Returns (2006)
This film can be described as a comeback to go under, as the film has just a space budget for 2006, at that time it was the most expensive film in history, and adjusted for inflation, in our time it will cost about 300 million dollars.

The most disastrous film about Superman, everything here is like with other films in this top, but here one could expect billions in fees, since Superman is one of the personifications of American film culture, but no, the film was crushed by the audience, and critics reacted to it with a share coolness.
A stupid Superman costume, that’s what I remember from this film, it seems to me that if the film came out at the beginning of the century, it would already be comical, but for some reason it seemed to the creators that it was necessary to observe some kind of comic canon.
All the mistakes of this picture were corrected in the movie “Man of Steel” (2013), where at least Superman had a normal costume, and the film itself is one of the best in the DC Universe.
Budget $270,000,000, US fees $200,081,192, Worldwide gross $391,081,192
