A unique effort has been started by hardware prototyping specialist Ken Pillonel to print a transparent charging cover for the AirPods Pro. Pillonel started the project by obtaining 3D models and creating the unique AirPods Pro case using clear stereolithography (SLA) resin. He carefully manufactured the components on a Formlabs Form 3+ 3D printer, cleaned them with isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and then thoroughly dried them with compressed air.
The following step involved curing the components, which was followed by a difficult sanding procedure that was carried out in stages using grits of 400, 600, 800, and 1000. The pieces were routinely submerged in tap water during this procedure to maintain cleanliness and monitor development.
Pillonel methodically sprayed a clear spray varnish, turning the once opaque components into a dazzling, totally transparent finish after cleaning the pieces with fresh IPA and using hot air to prevent mineral residue. This accomplishment not only fits with a nostalgic style evoking vintage transparent technology, but it also demonstrates Pillonel’s dedication to promoting sustainability and repairability in the electronics industry.
In the midst of pushing the envelope of modern technology, Ken Pillonel’s creative endeavour emphasises the value of sustainable design and repairability and offers a look into a more accountable future for consumer electronics.
