Vietnam has banned the most awaited Barbie movie due to a glimpse of nine-dash line of the South China Sea. The map shows China’s hegemony over the seas and special economic zone of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. This made Vietnam believe that their sovereignty is being breached.
The movie was scheduled for release on July 21 however as of now all commercial premiere of the film has been terminated.
On Monday, Vi Kien Thanh, director general of the Vietnam Cinema Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism averred that the ban was ascertained by the National Film Evaluation Council.
“We do not grant license for the American movie ‘Barbie’ to release in Vietnam because it contains the offending image of the nine-dash line,” quoted newspaper agency Tuoi Tre newspaper.
The Warner Bros film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
