Actor-model Rhea Chakraborty, who was arrested by the NCB in a drug-related case, narrated her ordeal inside the jail.
Rhea sharing her experience stated that jail is a place beyond the imagination for many people. She said that it was a place that she found hard to describe in its general environment because the usual culture of social etiquette does not apply here. This is depicted in jail where everyone has a number assigned to them rather than being recognized by their names and personal identities. Rhea said that, when people stay in an under-trial prison, they possess only a ‘UT number’ not a name, so, one is depersonalized to some extent.
Elaborating on her experiences in this environment, she said that every day felt like a week in jail, and that time felt like it had come to a halt. Having no occupations and no hopes to get out of that gloomy place, days appeared to be very long and the human mind could not stand such conditions.
Trials of Depression and Darkness
Rhea said that everyone talks about how difficult it is to adapt to life inside jail, and this is true for the first two weeks at least. She said that it is one of those experiences that no one prepares for, and when it happens, it is hard to accept. Some of the effects that Rhea went through as a result of being in jail include severe depression and the feeling of complete darkness. She admitted that the situation made her think very negatively, which was not normal because she is usually happy-go-lucky and very positive.
Where there is darkness, there must also be light
Despite the predominant darkness in Rhea’s life, she had to overcome a few barriers and give some hope not only to herself but to others too. She observed sexual and social abuse, depression, hopelessness, and desperation among most of the women in jail. To change the topic partially, Rhea began to share her positive energy and good moods with them. She started teaching yoga, used to perform dance with the children, and even read out poems to the children there. These activities not only helped her cope with the situation but also brought a little bit of joy to those around her.
Rhea Chakraborty and Sushant Singh Rajput: A Painful Chapter
Sushant Singh Rajput’s girlfriend before his death on 14th June 2020 was Rhea Chakraborty. After his death, his parents filed a case against Rhea under section 306 of the IPC for abetment to suicide. In September 2020, she was arrested by the NCB in the drug angle that came to light in the investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. Overall Rhea seems to have had a difficult and profound time in jail which must have been stressful and full of hardship. Nevertheless, she was able to find some glimmer of hope not only for herself but for others during those times.
