The answer to this question will depend on the individual opinions and preferences. Since Independence, Journalism and thus news channels have always been affected by politics or political parties. Almost all news channels have more or less inclination towards one or more political parties. The irony is that even our national channel, Doordarshan won’t easily broadcast anything against the ruling party at the center.
Zee News is known to have pro-BJP views. The channel was launched in 1999 and is the flagship property of Zee Media Corporation Ltd. It presently operated almost 15 news and entertainment channels such as Zee Hindustan (Hindi), Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal (Punjabi and Hindi), Zee 24 Taas ( Marathi), 24 Ghanta ( Bengali), Zee Marudhara (Hindi), Zee 24 Gantalu (Telugu), Zee Gantalu Kashmiri and Zee Prime English Channel etc.
In 2012, when the Congress party was facing allegations regarding Coal scams, Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel and Power Limited, accused Zee News of trying to extort Rs 100 crore from him for not airing stories against his company. Also, two senior journalists have been arrested so far in this case.
2016 JNU Protests
Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a protest on their campus on 9 February 2016 against the capital punishment assigned to the 2001 Indian Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. Zee News reported that some of the students from Democratic Students’ Union (DSU) had raised slogans such as “Pakistan Zindabad” and “Bharat Ki Barbadi”. Many alleged that the channel showed doctorate video but it came out completely authentic.
New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV) was founded by husband and wife Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy. It presently operated almost 5 more channels such as NDTV Profit – Business news channel, NDTV Good Times – Lifestyle channel, NDTV 24×7 – 24-hour English news channel, NDTV India – 24-hour Hindi news channel and ATN NDTV 24×7.
During 2010-2011, Radia tapes appeared that demonstrate how Radia attempted to use some media persons including NDTV’sBarkha Dutt to influence the decision to appoint A. Raja as telecom minister.
Allegation Of Corruption And Criminal Conspiracy
CBI filed cases against Prannoy Roy and many others under Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
One Day Ban
The channel face one day ban on November 9 for revealing sensitive details while covering January’s deadly attack on the Pathankot air base.
NDTV also faced other controversies such as Commonwealth Games Contract, Suit against TAM India and 2008 Loan Case.
