The head of the World Health Organization expressed his concern on Wednesday over the incumbent health crisis in China. The chief spoke about the unprecedented wave of Covid cases in China.
He further urged the authorities in Beijing to offer meticulous information about the degree and severity of the health situation in the country.
“WHO is very concerned over the evolving situation in China,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus averred in a weekly news conference. He appealed for detailed information on the severity of the disease prevailing in the patients, number of hospital admissions and other intensive care requirements.
Earlier, health experts also warned the citizen about prevalence of new variants amidst the COVID-19 emergence.
Xu Wenbo, director of the China CDC’s National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention, said each hospital will be going for genome sequencing and collect sample from the patients.
“This will allow us to monitor in real-time the dynamics of the transmission of Omicron in China and the proportion of its various sub-lineages and new strains with potentially altered biological characteristics, including their clinical manifestations, transmissibility and pathogenicity,” he adds.
“This will provide a scientific basis for the development of vaccines and the evaluation of diagnostic tools, including PCR and antigen tests.”
