Yesterday saw the release of two Kollywood Pongal films: Ayalan, starring Siva Karthikeyan, and Captain Miller, featuring Dhanush. Captain Miller started off stronger at the box office than the other one.
On its opening day, Captain Miller brought in around Rs. 8.50 crore at the Indian box office, with Rs. 6.25 crore coming from Tamil Nadu. The first-day collections in Tamil Nadu are lower than those of Thiruchitramblam and Naane Varuvean, but higher than those of Dhanush’s last movie, Vathi.
The movie was also released with a Hindi dubbing, although it didn’t do well at the box office. The film, which has been dubbed in Telugu, has been postponed until after Sankranti releases to give the market more breathing room.
Region-wise collections
The following are Captain Miller’s first-day box office receipts at the Indian box office:
Tamil Nadu – Rs. 6.25 crore
Karnataka – Rs. 1.10 crore
Kerala – Rs. 60 lakhs
North India – Rs. 50 lakhs
Total – Rs. 8.50 crore
Ayalan only made Rs. 4 crore on its first day at the Indian box office, which was a dismal performance. There were few collections outside of Tamil Nadu, therefore nearly all of it originated there. Positively, the movie is getting excellent reviews and has witnessed a significant increase in box office receipts today. Should the movie succeed in making a significant impact on Sunday, it will have a solid foundation to work from during the holiday season.
The following is the first-day box office receipt for Ayalan in India:
Tamil Nadu – Rs. 3.50 crore
Rest of India – Rs. 50 lakhs
Total – Rs. 4 crore
