In our day to day life, we eat many things from the market and do not bother to check the labels of these eateries. Most of the people eat street foods daily. But do we know that these things are baked or fried in trans- fats?
What is Trans-Fats?
Usually, people don’t know about trans-fats. Trans-Fatty acids or trans-fats are a type of unsaturated that can occur at very low levels in some meat or dairy products. But the issue is with man-made trans-fats i.e. hydrogenated oil. these artificial trans-fats occur when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil, like corn, soy or cottonseed oil to make it solid through a process called hydrogenation. This oil is commonly used in almost every fry and baked product in the market. Even in the street foods, this is common. these foods are baked and fried into hydrogenated oils. This is so because it is cheap for producers than oil.
Why is WHO against Trans-Fats?
WHO said countries to completely eliminate trans-fats from eatable products. This is so because this is really very harmful to human body. It increases the bad cholesterol and body and decreases the good one. This can cause a heart disease and can increase the chances of heart attacks. According to World Health Organization, trans fat is thought to be responsible for an estimated 500,000 premature deaths from cardiovascular disease worldwide every year.
Measures by FSSAI(Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) in India:
- Reducing the percentage of trans-fats in products to 5%.
- Mandatory declaration of the number of trans fats on product labels.
But we don’t bother to read labels of product. So, from today onwards start reading the labels of your eateries and avoid trans fats as much as you can. Basically, you will find it in every baked and fried product expect some products. You can know this by reading Nutrition facts Panel of a product or can judge it by reading ingredients list referred to as ” Partially Hydrogenated Oils”.
