ED is probing a money laundering case related to betting syndicates and Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat and one such case has been interrogated. This is another high profile probe where a betting syndicate was alleged to have been involved in money laundering through accounts and property investments. Mallika’s name came out during a scrutiny of cash dealings associated with one of the main accused in the case.
According to reports, ED officials found certain transactions that raised suspicions about her possible involvement. Therefore, Mallika was invited for questioning to explain her connections with the financial matters. She claimed to have engaged himself in lawful business, and did not have any knowledge of the illegality of the financial business. She also said that she was not necessarily connected with the case and has been fully supporting the authorities in their investigation.
This is not the first time Bollywood celebrities have been involved in some financial scam.Due to connections with celebrities big amounts of money which this industry deals the concentration of offshore accounts or suspicious operation is a reality. Another Bollywoood actress, Pooja Banerjee has also been probed in this particular case. While both of these women have denied any wrong doing their involvement. It has raised the eye brows of many.
The ED’s probe into the betting network exposed well-orchestrated network. One that hired celebrities in order to give a scent of legitimacy to their operations. Talking about Mallika’s association with the case, the investigators have not concluded whether she had deliberately invested money through or else she was a victim of the activty.
For Mallika the whole affair has turned into something shocking and eye-opening bringing unwanted public attention to her professional and personal contacts. However, legal advisors said that the transparency and her cooperation with the ED and her openness in matters of finance can work in her favour. This case highlight the growing concerns over Bollywood link to financial scandal. For now Mallika Sherawat is in the news for wrong reason as the ED is not leaving any stone unturned in its investigation. This case shows how glamour careers interfere with scandals, knowingly or unknowingly.
If Mallika has no involvement in the act this case will be a one-time lesson to her and other ladies in the film trade. However, if the evidence dials the involvement a notch higher then it can have serious impacts on her at the workplace and in the media. The investigation has not yet been completed in the ED and the public is anxiously waiting for more information about it.
