In an unexpected phone call, US President Donald Trump called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and congratulated him on his electoral success in the Uttar Pradesh election. US Press Secretary Sean Spicer informed reporters that President Trump congratulated Prime Minister Modi on his recent success in the election.
The BJP registered a massive victory in Uttar Pradesh election earlier this month, winning 312 of the state’s 403 seats. This is the second time Mr Trump has called PM Modi ever since his inauguration as President of the United States.
India and US share an extensive strategic, military and cultural relationship. After the conclusion of the US-India civil nuclear agreement, both the governments refocuses on areas of cooperation which enjoy favourable political and electoral consensus.
Interestingly, the US is India’s second largest trading partner and India is its 11th largest trading partner. Most importantly, in 2001, Former President Bush lifted sanctions imposed under the terms of the 1994 Nuclear Proliferation Prevention Act following India’s nuclear tests in May 1998.
