The popular comedy show, The Great Indian Kapil Show, has found itself in legal trouble. Recently, a foundation named the Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation (BBMF). Which promotes Bengali culture, and issued a legal notice against the show. Dr. Mondal, the President of BBMF, believes the show is disrespecting the legacy of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and misrepresenting certain cultural aspects. The legal notice, dated November 1, states that the show could offend the cultural and religious sentiments of viewers.
What’s the Controversy About?
As per the BBMF represented by Dr. Mondal’s legal advisor Nripendra Krishna Roy, the show makes fun of the figure of Rabindranath Tagore who is a poet and writer as well as a great thinker. Tagore occupies a unique position in Bengali culture and any misrepresentation of his legacy can deeply affect cultural sentiments. In the opinion of Dr. Mondal, the humor and portrayal in the show may turn into an offending thing for the viewers, who respect Tagore, his creative work, and his effect on active Indian literature and culture.
Salman Khan’s Name Cleared from the Controversy
Amid these claims. Rumors began to circulate that Salman Khan’s production house was somehow involved with The Great Indian Kapil Show. But giving clarifications a spokesperson for Salman Khan firmly stated that neither Salman Khan nor his production house, SKTV, is connected to the show. The statement clarified, “We are not associated with The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix. Reports linking Salman Khan or SKTV to this legal notice are incorrect.” This ensured that his production company had no involvement in the show’s operations.
The Show’s Response
Parinam Law Associates, who advocate for The Great Indian Kapil Show, officials have denied all allegations in the notice. The law firm cleared that the intention of the show is only comedy and has no goal to offend Rabindranath Tagore or any religion or culture. The legal consultants continued saying that the show is funny and meant to be watched with no serious message to send, and not to undermine cultural icons.
The Show’s Second Season Launch
The Great Indian Kapil Show, hosted by comedian Kapil Sharma, is everyone’s favorite. It recently launched its second season on September 21. Alongside Kapil, the show features popular comedians and actors like Archana Puran Singh, Sunil Grover, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, and Rajiv Thakur. The new season has received a positive response from audiences for its humor. But the recent legal notice has cast a shadow over its success.
