Anwaarul Haq Kakar, a Balochistan Awami Party senator, has been chosen Pakistan’s interim prime minister, just days after the legislature was dissolved. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed Kakkar’s appointment as caretaker PM on Saturday. In a meeting on Saturday, departing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and outgoing opposition leader Raja Riaz achieved an agreement on Kakar’s name. Kakar’s nomination was approved by President Arif Alvi.

“We first agreed that whoever should be prime minister, he should be from a smaller province so smaller provinces’ grievances should be addressed,” averred Riaz, as quoted by news agency AFP.
The legislature was dissolved on August 9, paving the way for a new election in which former Prime Minister Imran Khan would be unable to run. The election will take place within 90 days of the parliament being dissolved, according to the regulations.
