Fords, Cadillacs, and even the rare Mack milk truck made in 1941. This is all you get to see if you go 50 miles from Atlanta, where there is a patch of a forest full of rusty cars. The plaque reads “The world’s oldest car cemetery, 80 years old.”There are more than four thousand classic cars in the “city of old cars”, most of which are manufactured in 1972 or older.

The history of the old car cemetery goes back to 1931 when the Lewis family opened a department store in the town of White. They sold everything from auto parts to clothing. When the US entered World War II, and resources such as steel and tires began to run out, the Lewis added a junkyard to their business. They bought old cars, took them apart, and sold parts. By the end of the 40s, the department store had turned into a full-fledged site for the collection and cutting of obsolete cars. It was then that the current owner of the cemetery, Dean Lewis, was born.

Throughout his childhood, Dean played with cars. And Therefore, when in 1970 he got his father’s business, he decided to manage it in a completely different way: Dean decided that he would not disassemble cars, but save them. Over the next several decades, Dean spent thousands of dollars buying various old and wrecked cars at auctions and from individuals. One of Lewis’s most popular cars is the 1940 Ford used in Murder in Cowet County (1983) starring Johnny Cash and Andy Griffith.

The cemetery had grown so big that he had to buy more land. Dean sold some samples, but this was not a place for collectors to bargain – every car had a nostalgic value and Dean refused to sell them unless he felt the price was really worth it. He realized that he would make more money by charging entrance fees and photographing. Today, the cemetery of old cars is visited by hundreds of guests a year. They pay $15 to enter, and $10 more if they want to take pictures. Dean no longer sells spare parts, they are now part of his amazing museum collection.

The cemetery of these old cars looks like a creepy scene in the dense forest, but the reality is that it is an effort of Dean to make this huge collection and convert it into a Museum.
