Having prioritized the ODI World Cup and the ongoing World Test Championship during that time, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are all set to play their first-ever T20I match after 14 months. Rohit Sharma was selected in the 16-man squad for the three-match match against Afghanistan, which starts on January 11 in Mohali. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee on Sunday confirmed that the two veterans are almost certainly a part of the big plans for the big event in June.

There had been lengthy discussions and debates about whether or not two will and should be part of the T20 World Cup squad.

In the 2022 T20 World Cup quarterfinal knockout against England, Rohit and Kohli played their final Twenty20 International match. It was anticipated that they will be involved in the T20 World Cup schedule starting with the South Africa series, if not in the match against Australia.

After choosing them for the series against Afghanistan, the BCCI selection committee essentially put an end to the World Cup question; however, a former India selector revealed to PTI the real reason for their T20I comeback.

The two returned to upkeep the status-quo

“Decisions on Rohit and Virat can’t solely be taken by the selection committee. There is a lot at stake, broadcasters, sponsors and you can’t pick one and drop the other. Ajit and his team needed to maintain a status quo,” he mentioned.
