Renowned Indian film director Alphonse Puthren, who has made major contributions to Malayalam cinema, recently shared an unexpected and moving revelation on his Instagram page. In an open statement, he announced his retirement from the film industry and said that he had self-diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The film business, as well as his loyal fan following, have been shocked by this unexpected revelation.
About Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
A complicated neurodevelopmental disorder that affects conduct, social interaction, and communication is called autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The reason it is categorised as a “spectrum” disease is that it encompasses a wide range of symptoms in different intensities, making it an exceptionally varied condition.
Social issues are common for people with ASD, and may include trouble keeping eye contact, interacting in socially acceptable ways, and interpreting social signs and standards. Communication problems are widespread; some people struggle with conversation and pragmatic language, while others may have large vocabulary yet remain nonverbal.
Frequent observations include repetitive actions and strong interests, such as hand flapping or subject obsession. It’s also normal for people to have increased or decreased sensitivity to certain types of sensory stimulation, such as noises, textures, or lights.
The Diagnosis
When making an ASD diagnosis, medical experts conduct a thorough assessment that takes into account the patient’s behaviour, social and communication skills, developmental history, and, occasionally, genetic testing.
Behaviour therapy, speech therapy, and other specific therapies assist people improve social and communication skills; early intervention is key. Tailor-made support for academic performance is provided via individualised education programmes (IEPs), and medication can help control co-occurring problems.
Research is still ongoing, however it appears that both genetic and environmental factors may contribute to ASD.
